Model Calibration and Efficient Reservoir Imaging (MCERI)

• Dr. Akhil Datta-Gupta, Regents Professor and L.F. Peterson '36 Chair, received the Distinguished Achievement Awards in research by The Association of Former Students.

• Dr. Akhil Datta-Gupta, Regents Professor elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

• MCERI group  graduates continue to do very well. We have three doctoral students graduating in 2011. Jichao Yin has joined  Exxon-Mobil upstream research starting January, 2012. Alvaro Rey and Eric Bhark have joined Chevron in the reservoir simulation group. (Jan. 2012).

• Mike King was awarded SPE Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award at the SPE Annual Meeting for his technical  contributions in the area (Nov. 2011).

• Akhil Datta-Gupta was named a Regents Professor by the Texas A&M University System for exemplary performance at the State/International Level (Nov, 2011).

• Alvaro Rey of the MCERI group was selected as the winner of the doctoral division of the TAMU student paper contest for his work on integration of time lapse seismic data into high resolution geologic models. Congratulations Alvaro.(February, 2010).

• Dr. Akhil Datta-Gupta was awarded the 2009 SPE John Fraklin Carll Award for distinguished contributions to Petroleum Engineering. This is one of the major technical awards of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. (October, 2009)

• Dr. Michael King joins as the co-director of the MCERI. Mike is well known for his contributions to reservoir simulation and upscaling and will greatly strengthen the MCERI research. Welcome Mike. (July, 2009).

• Ahmed Al-Huthali has won the First place in the doctoral division of the SPE regional student paper contest for his talk on field-scale optimization of waterflooding via rate control. Ahmed will represent Texas A&M at the International Student paper Contest during the SPE annual meeting in New Orleans in October, 2009. Good luck Ahmed!!.

• MCERI research group has been awarded an NSF CMG research project titled  ‘Multiscale data integration using facies based hierarchical Bayesian models’ effective September 1, 2007. This is a collaborative project between Mathematics and statistics department at Texas A&M.

• Dayo Oyerinde has won the First place in the doctoral division of the SPE regional student paper contest for his talk on streamline-based history matching of three phase flow. Dayo will represent Texas A&M at the International Student paper Contest during the SPE annual meeting in Anaheim in November, 2007. Good luck Dayo!

• MCERI group is proud to announce that Dr. Hao Cheng (2005 graduate) will be awarded the SPE Cedric K. Fergusen medal for the best peer approved paper in 2005.  The paper titled ‘A Comparison of Travel Time vs. Amplitude Matching for Field Scale Production Data Integration: Sensitivity, Non-Linearity and Practical Implications’ (SPE Journal, March 2005) is co-authored by Dr. Zhong He and Dr. Akhil Datta-Gupta.  The co-authors will receive the Cedric K. Fergusen Certificate. See the award letter here.  This is the second time the MCERI group has been awarded the Fergusen Medal. The prior recipient was Dr. Seongsik Yoon in 2000.   

• SPE Textbook “Streamline Simulation: Theory & Practice” by A. Datta-Gupta and M. J. King is now completed. Expected publication date is Fall 2007.  View the table of contents here.

• Eduardo Jimenez won the SPE International Student Paper Contest (2005) in the Doctoral Division for his paper ‘Spatial Error and Convergence in Streamline Simulation.’ Eduardo was recognized at the SPE Annual meeting in Dallas, October 2005.

•  The MCERI research group has been awarded a U. S.  Department of Energy Project titled “Rapid Calibration of High Resolution Geologic Models to Dynamic Data Using Inverse Modeling: Field Application and Validation”. The three year research project is a collaborative effort with Chevron-Texaco. The Department of Energy will contribute approximately 800K towards this project. All MCERI members will benefit from the additional resources and research work brought forth by this project.

• Dr. Akhil Datta-Gupta has been appointed the inaugural holder of the College of Engineering’s endowed LeSuer Chair in Reservoir Management. Ken '57 and Kim-Eng LeSuer endowed the chair to attract and retain outstanding faculty leaders in petroleum engineering reservoir management.
