MCERI Group was recently Awarded $1.2 MM from the
U.S. Department of Energy. The goal of this project is to develop and
demonstrate a rapid and cost-effective methodology for spatio-temporal
tracking of CO
2 plumes during geologic
sequestration using joint tomographic inversion of seismic data and
distributed pressure and temperature measurements. Key elements
of our methodology are: (a) a computationally efficient approach to
pressure and temperature propagation calculations using the Fast
Marching Method (FMM), (b) analysis of time lapse seismic data using a
novel ‘seismic onset time’ approach to detect fluid front
propagation , (c) data assimilation and uncertainty assessment via
joint Bayesian inversion of pressure, temperature and time lapse
seismic data, and (d) field validation of the methodology using data
collected from ongoing field projects involving CO
2 utilization
for enhanced oil recovery and frequent time lapse seismic monitoring.
The project team is led by Texas A&M University and includes
Battelle as a subcontractor with support from Shell, Anadarko, Chevron
and JX Nippon.

SPE’s Annual Technical
Conference and Exhibition held 9-11
October 2017 in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Datta-Gupta was recognized for his
seminal contribution in high
resolution fluid flow simulation using streamlines and dynamic data
integration leading to improved reservoir
characterization, reservoir
management and field performance assessment.
